Welcome to Madeira Cottage

We would like to welcome you to Madeira Cottage. For the past 10 years this beachfront retreat has been our family “home from home”.

This pink, thatched nineteenth century cottage, with its distinctive bay windows, has three bedrooms (sleeps six), all with their own bathrooms.

It is difficult to describe the approach to Lyme Regis and the cottage, but as you drive slowly down Broad Street, you will appreciate…

…the remarkable situation of the town, the principal street almost hurrying into the water, the walk to the Cobb, skirting round the pleasant little bay, which, in the season, is animated with bathing machines and company; the Cobb itself, its old wonders and new improvements (sic), with the very beautiful line of cliffs stretching out to the east of town, are what the stranger’s eye will seek; and a very strange stranger it must be, who does not see charms in the immediate environs of Lyme, to make him wish to know it better.”
Jane Austen. Persuasion Ch.11.

You are drawn towards the view of the sea which lies beyond the Georgian buildings at the bottom of the hill. Take a sharp turn right past the town clock and ahead, at sea level, the breath-taking expanse of beach and sea stretches out before you: The sounds of seagulls, waves breaking on pebbles and the sea air greet you.

Here you will find Madeira Cottage occupying pride of place on the beachfront and just beyond the high tide wall. Yet it is only two minutes walk from the main thoroughfare. In the other direction, a gentle stroll along the front brings you to the harbour with its collection of pubs, ice cream stalls, fresh fish shop and sundry other seaside traders.
