Madeira Cottage

If you’re looking for a traditional, bucket and spade, English beach holiday look no further than Madeira Cottage,Lyme Regis.

Perfect for all ages, its current owners have used this grade II listed building as a treasured family retreat for 25 years. With its low ceilings and gently sloping floors it still retains much original period charm which is enhanced by the simple antique furniture and tasteful furnishings. However, the facilities are modern; very good beds, heating, generously equipped fitted kitchen and four well appointed bathrooms

Looking out from the cottage eastwards lies the Cobb, which dissects two of Lyme’s three beaches: Madeira Cottage looks directly out onto the main beach, which is a mix of fine Normandy sand and pebbles. This beach is a perfect launchpad for swimming, paddle boarding and surfing when the wind allows. At low tide, when “Lucy’s Ledge” emerges, people of all ages can be seen rockpooling for all manner of sea life.

Monmouth Beach, the furthest east is a mix of shingle and sand and is wilder and perfect for those wanting solace and silence. Look carefully when the tide is out and you will see deeply embedded giant fossils at the far end.

The Marine Aquarium sits at the end of the Cobb. Amidst fishing boats and sailing boats, this charming old building is a favourite for those wanting to know more about local sea life with low key charm.

A gentle stroll back along the Parade you pass yet more boats and an array of shops for fish n’ chips and ice cream: but watch out for hungry seagulls!

On Tuesday evenings during high season you can listen to the local Town Band; sometimes groups of Morris dancers display their skills!
